The balance $40,000 represents the cost of the land required for the rest of the line.
The smallness for this amount is due to the fact that very little of the Earthwork Bank is taken from Borrow pits, nearly all being taken from the cuttings or from Crown Land on the hill sides. A great deal of the land already bought and charged against the Railway will be handed back after the completion of Construction.
Earthwork.
The expenditure under Banks and cuttings includes the cost of Service Roads which are heavy. The estimated amount of $23,848 allows for the metre gauge line bank and temporary bridges between the South Tunnel Face and Tai Kok Taul Store Yard. Also the cart road between Lok Lo-ha and the North Face of the Tunnel.
The expenditure under Earthwork on the line is very heavy due to the hilly nature of the country passed through necessitating very high banks and deep cuttings.
As in most of the cuttings it is necessary to have a good deal of blasting, I have taken out all cuttings for double line, and wherever the material excavated is in excess of the single line Bank, I have made the Bank for double line also.

The Reclamation from the sea of a site for Kowloon Station Yard with the necessary sea wall accounts for $700,000.
There is also a rather heavy item for drainage work in the Reclamation for the Station Yard. A large intercepting sewer as well as a storm water drain has to be built along Des Voeux Road. The sewer has its outfall near Blackhead's Point and the storm water drain is carried in a 10 feet culvert under the Station Yard opposite Granville Road.
There is also a heavy retaining wall in cutting No. 4 to avoid the long slopes necessitated by an open cutting. The cost of a tunnel at this point was found to be
